This project consists of three buildings with a total of 930 beds. Many students use bicycles as a mode of transportation on campus, and more than a quarter also have surfboards, requiring large amounts of storage for bikes and surfboards in each dorm building.
Most student housing on campus is not air-conditioned; the ocean breeze is used to cool living areas. To provide the most effective use of the natural breeze, a wind analysis was performed to determine the best orientation and shape of the buildings. It was determined that a large courtyard in the center of the structure with angled off-chutes and openings at the ends would direct the wind flow through the courtyard and into the units. These buildings will be constructed with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) and clad with stucco and stone.
