STACEY JARDINE, SCCID, NCIDQ, IIDA
Associate | Interior Designer
Has anyone ever made you feel like you couldn’t accomplish something, even yourself? A few years ago, I felt this way while studying for the NCIDQ exam. I studied for six months, but when I took the exam, I failed. It was heartbreaking and embarrassing.
This experience led me to procrastinate for another two years. It wasn’t until I joined FFKR that I found the courage to try again. My colleagues supported me with encouragement and study tools. With their help, I passed two exams in 2023 and the final one in 2024.
Someone once told me, “You can do hard things.” I realized I was the only one holding myself back. Passing the NCIDQ tests proved that hard work pays off. Though I’m still learning, passing the exams reminds me that we can all accomplish hard things if we don’t give up.
The Significance of Certification in Interior Design
By Karen Cottle and Sydnie Young
What is a Certified Commercial Interior Designer, and what does that mean? The defining signifier of a highly qualified commercial interior designer is the NCIDQ Certification. Designers who hold this certification do quality work in spaces where the public learns, worships, heals, plays, eats, explores, and more.
Interior design has evolved significantly in the past few decades. Because of its rapid transformation, more understanding of the profession is often needed. Certified Interior Designers have been tested to meet industry standards for public health, safety, and welfare and are proficient in building systems, design applications, project coordination, codes, construction standards, and contract administration.
Certified Commercial Interior Designers conduct extensive research at the beginning of a project to understand its unique needs and integrate safety codes and standards. This research ensures that the project meets stakeholders’ goals and provides a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environment. A successful project benefits from the expertise of a certified designer woven throughout all phases, from conception to completion.
In Utah, Interior Designers who have received their NCIDQ Certification can apply for state certification. Education and certification requirements help ensure that designers possess the necessary knowledge and skills to protect the public effectively through interior building design while upholding high standards of professional conduct. FFKR boasts the largest number of NCIDQ-certified and State-Certified Commercial Interior Designers of any firm in Utah.
And they all are very, very cool.
PROCESS
At our core, we are passionate about creating user-focused experiences through our designs. Our approach centers on finding thoughtful and innovative ways to highlight each property’s unique characteristics, ensuring every space we design is memorable and functional. We stay at the forefront of design trends by gathering insights from various sources, including educational courses and industry conferences. This knowledge enables us to craft spaces that meet current market demands and anticipate the evolving preferences of future generations.
Our process begins with a deep understanding of the client’s vision and the specific needs of the project, whether it’s a new build, renovation, or tenant improvement.
- We start as early as brand development, building a story to create a harmonious experience at every touchpoint.
- Next, we move into programming to understand the project timeline, objectives, and goals.
- We then proceed with conceptual or schematic design work, creating presentations of imagery, drawings, and diagrams to depict how our design aligns with the client’s needs.
- Once a concept is selected, we develop communication drawings during the design development phase.
- After the design is communicated effectively, our team details all the functionality of the built interior environment for the construction documents.
- Concurrently, we can create an intensive and instructive digital specifications book containing all FF&E for purchasing.
- Before construction, we assist with any cost concerns and help find alternative options to maintain the client’s vision while achieving budgetary parameters.
- During the construction administration phase, our interiors team consults with all parties to maintain the consistency and quality of each project type.
Collaboration is vital to our success. While we are open to partnering with any architectural firm, we highly recommend working with our architecture arm at FFKR Architects. This in-house partnership allows us to collaborate efficiently. By reducing the potential for scope creep, we ensure a smooth and cohesive project delivery, resulting in a seamless integration of design elements and architectural structures.
Overall, our holistic and client-focused approach to interior design ensures that every project we undertake is executed with precision, creativity, and a deep commitment to excellence.

Working with Mika, the owner of Shimogamo, and her team exposed me to a culture I knew little about. Integrating their values and business model into the design was an enlightening and rewarding process.
